Pathology Service

The Ville Marie Medical Centre now offers an on-site Pathology Service that is directed by Dr Charles Catzavelos, a Harvard trained pathologist with extensive experience in the pathology of breast diseases. He is assisted by Martine Prevost, a cytotechnologist with over 20 years experience in cytologic diagnosis.

For patients undergoing a core biopsy in which a small piece of tissue is removed from the breast, the service provides an immediate provisional diagnosis based on a specialized technique called Breast Core Imprint Cytology, that has been shown to be 98% accurate in a recent published study performed at the Ville Marie Breast Center. Thereafter, the tissue will be sent for specialized processing which takes 24-48 hours after which the final pathology report will be available in 3-4 days.

In the case of Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsies where only cells are removed, the pathologist will be able to provide an immediate final pathologic diagnosis.

In all cases, Dr Catzavelos will be available to discuss the pathologic diagnosis with the patient’s Physician or the Patients themselves.
